As humans, we were created to live in community with others. We were not meant to journey through life alone. In times of joy and triumph, having someone to share it with makes it all the more special. And in times of struggle and hardship, having someone by our side can give us the strength and support we need. God wants us to find comfort in community.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says:
“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, New International Version
This is why God encourages us to find comfort in community. As Christians, we are part of a larger family—the family of Christ. God calls us to love and support one another as brothers and sisters. When we come together in fellowship, whether physically or virtually, we can experience the presence of God through the comfort in community we find with others.
In times where we feel isolated or alone, it can be easy to believe that no one understands what we’re going through. But when we open ourselves up to our Christian community, we may find that others have gone through similar struggles or have words of wisdom to offer. We can find comfort in community knowing that we are not alone in our experiences.
Furthermore, being part of a community allows us to use our gifts and talents for the benefit of others. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 mentions a good return for labor when working together with someone else. Our individual strengths can complement each other when used within a supportive community. This also allows us to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives—serving Him by serving others.
Redeeming God, thank You that even in a world where I often feel pressure to conform and protect myself, You still shine Your light of hope. You still invite me into the freedom of new life with You—in a community of love and encouragement. Help me celebrate this gift today and help my love—Your love in me—be a gentle invitation to others to join Your family. Amen.
