How Meditating on God’s Word Can Transform Your Sleep

Having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Download Abide for Christian sleep meditations that use calming techniques and Scripture verses framed in soothing stories to lull you into a peaceful slumber.

Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night worrying? Whether it’s a concern from the past or a fear of the future, worry can easily be all-consuming. And you may be wondering: How can I get out of this rut and transform my sleep and mindset from a worrier to a warrior?  Meditating on God’s Word may be the solution you seek.

To worry is to “allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles” — and in many ways, it’s the opposite of true meditation. Instead of allowing your mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles, godly meditation encourages you to dwell on God’s goodness and the promises found in His Word.

I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.

Psalm 119:15

In fact, more than a dozen times throughout Psalm 119 (NIV) the author speaks with adoration of meditating on the Word and works of God (ex. verses 27, 78, 97).

The hope of meditation is not that your worries will disappear, but rather that your confidence and trust in the Lord will increase. Then, when you are inevitably inclined to worry, you will have the tools to transform your mindset, shifting your thoughts from difficulty and trouble and focusing instead on the grace of God.

Before considering how meditation can transform you from a worrier to a warrior, let’s first look at two key outcomes of meditating on God’s Word:

Meditating Reminds You of God’s Character

When you are overwhelmed by the challenges of life, it can be easy to doubt God. But for the one facing difficulty and struggle, it is good news to remember the character of God. Meditating on Scripture reminds you that…

  • God is good – “O, taste and see that the Lord is good.” – Psalm 34:8 (NIV)
  • God is trustworthy – “For the Lord’s word is upright; all His works are trustworthy.” – Psalm 33:4 (NIV)
  • God is loving – “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” – 1 John 4:7-8 (NIV)
  • God is in control – “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:17 (NIV)
  • God is faithful – “The one who calls you is faithful, and He will also accomplish it.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:24 (NIV)

Meditating Reminds You of What God Has Done in the Past

By meditating on Scripture, you’re immersing yourself in stories of God’s faithfulness throughout the generations. When you are worried about what might happen in your own life, it can be a tremendous gift to remember what God has done in the past.

But how does it actually impact your life, transforming you from a chronic worrier to a confident warrior?

Purple flowers, an old journal, and an old picture remind us of the benefits of meditating on God's Word to remember what He's done in the past.

Meditation Transforms Your Sleep

Poor sleep has a significant impact on your overall health. From diminished memory, loss of energy, and increased mental health challenges, poor sleep is a nightmare.

By dwelling on God’s character and remembering the many miraculous works He has done in the past, you can find deep rest in your soul when you lie down to sleep at night. Instead of lying awake worried about how a situation might play out, you can fall asleep confident that God is good, trustworthy, and faithful. You can be sure that He has not forgotten you, and He will go before you in whatever your current concern may be.

Meditation Transforms Your Mindset

While poor sleep can wreck an otherwise normal night, so can a poor mindset wreck an otherwise normal day. Meditating on God’s Word gives you a reserve of hope to draw on during challenging days, and equips you with confidence that you can trust in God.

Remembering God’s character and what He has done in the past can profoundly transform you from a worrier to a warrior, and it all begins with godly meditation.
