In times of pressure, it’s always good to know that all your practice has made a difference in how you handle it. James, an early church leader, understood persecution and adversity firsthand, emphasizing the importance of staying strong through trials in his letter to the Jews.

James 1:12 says:

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”

James 1:12, New International Version

The way we handle pressure reflects what resides within us. If we’re harboring negative emotions, they will surface during challenges; however, embracing the peace of Jesus allows us to face trials without being shaken. It’s okay to stumble when navigating tough circumstances; it’s part of the growth process—a journey of learning and development.

Similar to a dramatic “walk-off hit” in baseball, facing life’s pressure-packed situations requires trust in God’s guidance. We play on His team, equipped with His unwavering support regardless of the outcome. Each challenge serves as a coaching opportunity from Him, ensuring growth and readiness for the next test.

Drawing inspiration from Dave Stewart, a renowned baseball pitcher, mastering pressure involves conditioning oneself for the “big game” mindset. Stewart’s success in crucial moments stemmed from his approach of imitating high-stakes scenarios since childhood, ultimately excelling in pivotal playoff and World Series games.

While the saying “Never let them see you sweat” may suit the ballfield, God calls us to a different response—to come alongside the hurting and offer genuine care and support in pressure situations in their lives. Aligning our actions with compassion and kindness reflects God’s love and nurtures relationships through empathy and understanding.

Lord, it’s never fun to face hardship. I’d rather sail through life with a nine to nothing lead. But that’s unrealistic. Your Word says that I will have trials and tribulations. And so I want to handle them with perseverance, peace, and humility. It’s not all on my shoulders, it’s on Yours because You care so much for me. I am grateful. I praise You and thank You in Jesus name. Amen.
