“Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne?” These rhetorical questions open the old Scottish folk song “Auld Lang Syne” traditionally sung on the stroke of midnight in the new year. But it never hurts to think about those questions anytime. What can we learn from the year just gone by? Pray with me a prayer as the year ends and we’re on the cusp of a new adventure.

A silhouetted man walking through an archway onto a new road as he prays a prayer as the year ends.

Dear Lord, we’ve been through a lot together this year. Thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Everything I have, everything I’ve done, is from Your hand. I do not take it for granted. But I admit that much of it hasn’t been easy.

I confess that I have doubted Your goodness when times have been especially hard. When I’ve seen friends struggle with agonizing physical problems and financial stress seemingly beyond what they can handle, I have wondered where You are. Yet You always remind me that Your love endures forever. You are never far off.

I don’t want to just be a fair-weather fan. I want to be able to praise You in the valleys as well as on the mountain tops. Immerse me in Your Word so that I might remember at all times that Your kindness surrounds me. You have prepared a table for me in the presence of my enemies—and oftentimes those enemies are my worries and my fears.

Thank You for being ever near. As we are on the brink of a new year, help me to see through Your eyes. May my love for others increase, my doubts and fears decrease, and my hope be ever present. In this new year, I will walk by Your side. Thank You for never letting go of my hand. It’s in the faithful name of Jesus that I pray, amen.
