My recent college graduate son got a seasonal job at a state park in Vermont. It would just be from May to October, so finding a place to live proved to be quite a challenge. He’s super introverted, so he wanted to live alone. He also required a short-term lease and needed something furnished. So we did what every modern person does when searching for such a thing: we hit the internet, fully believing that God can do what He says He can do and provide what my son needed.

But after more than an hour of searching, we didn’t find anything close enough, decent enough, in a good area where he’d be safe, etc. I closed my computer and I prayed: “Lord, I’ve used every search term I can think of and haven’t found anything. Please direct us to the place you have for my son.”

What God Can Do When We Pray

I reopened my computer and typed in the same words I had typed in before: “furnished apartments, Burlington, Vermont.”

The first site that popped up was called “Furnished Finders.” Huh. That hadn’t shown up before. Apparently, people all over the country who might have a room, a small apartment, or the like will rent them short-term to people like traveling nurses. They’re furnished (thus the name), and usually in a safe place.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. I started sending the links to specific places in Burlington to my son. He initiated contact with several that looked promising, and then we waited. Within an hour, a gentleman responded. My son had asked if he specifically had to be a traveling medical worker to rent this place and told the man about his job at the nearby state park. Turns out, the man worked at the park himself as a boat captain. He’d be thrilled to have my son there for the season.

Coincidence? Not likely. It was just another example of taking God at His Word and watching Him work. I made the choice to believe God can do what He says He can do.

Folded hands on an open Bible show how you can learn what God can do.

What God Can Do About Worry

Philippians 4:6 says, “… do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” My son, who has decided that God does not exist, was anxious about where he was going to live. He was beginning to think he might not be able to take this job because he didn’t see any solution for his housing need.

And then I prayed.

And then God provided.

We don’t always get such quick answers to our prayers. But those moments when God reminds us that He definitely can do what He says He can do increase our faith. Has my son come to that realization yet? No. But I keep praying that God keeps revealing Himself to be faithful.

How to Witness What God Can Do

Know God’s Word: To take God at His Word, I had to know His Word. I had to know that He would provide. Why would I ask Him if I didn’t believe that? Believing that God is who He says He is and that He can do what He says He can do changes everything. Spend regular time every day listening, reading, meditating on God’s Word.

Remember His Faithfulness: Keep a gratitude journal where you write down all the ways in which God has been faithful in your life. Regularly reflect on Scriptures that speak about God’s faithfulness, such as Psalm 36:5 which says, “Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” And then surround yourself with a community of believers who also recognize and testify to God’s faithfulness in their lives. This will serve as a constant reminder and encouragement of His unchanging character and promises.

Ask, Seek, Knock: Matthew 7:7-8 reminds us that we can ask for what we need and trust that it will be given to us. This passage also emphasizes the importance of persistence in prayer and seeking guidance from God. Ultimately, these verses remind us to have faith and trust in God’s plan for our lives. The more you see God doing what He says He can do, the more you will trust Him.

Listen to a short segment of this Abide meditation based on Matthew 7:7. Let God speak to your heart about how He can do what He says He can do.

Seeing What God Can Do Changes Everything

Trusting in God’s promises and having faith in His ability to fulfill them can completely transform your outlook on life. When we truly believe that God can do what He says He can do, it brings a sense of peace and hope that surpasses all understanding. It allows us to let go of our worries and fears, knowing that God is in control, and He will never fail us.

This belief also gives us the courage to step out in faith and pursue our dreams, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. If my son had let his fear hold him back from moving to Vermont for six months, he would not have had the experiences he had there. He would be a different person.

Seeing what God can do every day helps us overcome any obstacles or challenges because we know that nothing is impossible for Him. Ultimately, believing in God’s power and sovereignty changes everything by giving us a firm foundation and an unwavering confidence in His love and goodness.
