Simple words can often hold profound truths, like the timeless refrain of a children’s song: “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.”

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus urges us to let our light shine before others, illuminating the darkness around us and pointing others to the glory of our heavenly Father:

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16, English Standard Version

Imagine Jesus, standing on the shores of Galilee, pointing to a city set on a hill, its lights shining brightly against the darkening sky. He reminds us that we, too, are like that city—a brightness that cannot be hidden, meant to shine forth and bring hope to those around us.

Just as a lightbulb must be connected to a power source to shine brightly, our light shines brightest when we abide in Christ, allowing His light to shine through us.

It’s not enough to simply possess the light; we must let it shine. God calls us to be bold and unapologetic in our faith. We refuse to hide our light under a bushel. The darkness of the world cannot overcome it. Instead, we’re to shine brightly, illuminating the way for others until the day Jesus returns to take us home.

Every good and perfect gift comes from God, the Father of heavenly lights. He provides us with good things. He also equips us to do good works that shine His glory into the world. These good works are not merely tasks to check off a list but expressions of our inner transformation. They radiate the love and grace of Christ to those around us.

Living as a beacon in a dark world may not always be comfortable or easy, but it’s worth it. When we live and love radically, people take notice, and God is glorified.

Lord God, You are the light of the world. And You have given that same light to me. A light that now shines through me out to the world around me. Let me never forget that others can see You in me. In my words, my actions, my life. Instead of hiding the light within me, give me the strength to put the light on the stand so that the whole world can see who You are through me. Find me worthy to be a bright shining beacon for You so that You may receive all of the praise and glory. In Jesus name, amen.
