Are you a young woman of faith looking to live out the teachings of Jesus in your everyday life? It can be hard to know where to start, but one good place to begin is learning some essential life skills. Developing and honing these key abilities will not only make it easier for you to weather difficult times but also open even more doors for growth and maturity as a disciple of Christ. These essential life skills could transform your walk with God!

Develop Self-discipline

First, one of the essential life skills you’ll need is the ability to regulate yourself, be reliable, and follow through on commitments. Self-discipline is a priceless quality, and it takes practice to develop. Just like physical muscles, the muscles of self-control can be trained and strengthened. Start with something small, like putting away your clothes each day. Then move on to bigger things like grocery shopping for healthy food instead of eating junk food.

The Bible teaches in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” The Spirit of God gives you self-discipline. He will help you with it. So don’t be discouraged when it seems hard at first. Keep pressing on and trusting God to help you grow in this area. Baby step by baby step. Identify an area in which you need more discipline, and ask the Spirit of God to help you grow. With consistent practice and determination, you can develop self-discipline and become a reliable and trustworthy person who follows through on commitments.

Cultivate Emotional Intelligence

Cultivating emotional intelligence is crucial for your personal growth and development as a young woman. It’s one of the essential life skills that not many people talk about. There are two main parts to emotional intelligence: understanding and controlling your own emotions, and understanding the emotions of others. Both are necessary to maintaining strong personal relationships. Proverbs 16:32 says, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” These words remind us that managing our own emotions is a sign of strength and wisdom. It takes intentional effort to pause, reflect, and respond in a way that aligns with our values. By learning practical strategies for emotional regulation and building healthy relationships, you can make a positive impact in your own life and in the lives of those around you.

The second part of emotional intelligence is learning to read other people and be both sympathetic and empathetic. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Learning to read other people and know how to respond emotionally is an essential life skill as you mature. Again, start small. If you have a hard time recognizing the feelings of others, ask the people you know the best to help you by telling you what they are feeling.

Learn Time Management

Time management may seem like an impossible task, but it’s actually a vital skill that can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Creating schedules and routines can help prioritize tasks and keep you organized, ensuring that you have time for yourself and the things that matter most. Ephesians 5:16 reminds us to “make the most of every opportunity,” and wise time management is one way to do that. Instead of letting life control you, take control of your time and make the most of it. With a little creativity and discipline, you can create a schedule and routine that helps you achieve your goals in all areas of your life. Make use of your smartphone’s scheduling and reminder features. Ask for help. And again, start small.

Develop Financial Literacy

Financial literacy is not just an important skill to have, it is also a biblical principle that young women should strive to develop. God has entrusted us with resources, and it is our responsibility to manage them well (Matthew 25:14-30, the Parable of the Talents). Budgeting, saving, investing, taxes, and other financial matters are all essential components of good stewardship. By understanding these concepts and putting them into practice, you can make wise decisions about your finances and achieve your goals. Seek out resources—whether it be through books, classes, podcasts, or mentors—that can help you develop your financial literacy and live a life that honors God. Remember, even small steps toward financial literacy can make a big difference in your future.

Find a Mentor

Proverbs 15:22 says “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” As a young woman starting out in your professional and personal life, seeking out the guidance of experienced individuals can be the key to unlocking your full potential. Finding a mentor, someone who has walked the path before you, can provide invaluable insights and advice on how to navigate the challenges that come your way. Whether it’s in your chosen career or personal relationships, having a mentor by your side can help you reach new heights and achieve success. Don’t be afraid to reach out and connect with those who have the experience and wisdom to guide you on your journey.

Stay Humble

As a young woman with such great potential, you can easily get caught up in the ways of the world and forget to stay humble. But it’s important to remember that humility is not a weakness, but rather a strength. Jesus himself lived a humble life, putting others before himself and serving those around him. If you have the same mindset as Christ, you can impact the world in powerful ways. Humility allows you to be teachable and open to learning from others, regardless of their age or status. It also helps you to be grateful for the blessings in your life and to show kindness and compassion to those around you.

The path to success takes a lot of work. The good news is, if you’re a follower of Jesus, you have the power of the Holy Spirit in you to help you grow in these essential life skills. Whether you already consider yourself to be self-disciplined, emotionally intelligent, and financially literate, there is always room for growth. Involve a mentor in your life, someone you trust, to help give you counsel and perspective. And don’t forget to stay humble throughout it all. Humility will be a consistent reminder to stay grounded no matter what successes you encounter. When times get tough or when there’s a drop in motivation, take a moment to reassess your values and goals.
