Frequently, a mere question or casual conversation can escalate into a heated conflict. Feeling misunderstood, having your motives questioned, or strongly advocating for an issue, can all lead to resorting to harsh language. Yet, using harsh words tends to put people on the defensive, often provoking them to retaliate. God’s Word shows us the way to healthy conflict resolution.

Proverbs 15:1 says:

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Proverbs 15:1, English Standard Version

It’s difficult to argue when one person is speaking gently, but it is easy to fuel a conflict with harsh words. Today’s verse is not only an instruction and good advice; it is actually a principle that applies the majority of the time. When you choose to listen to God’s Word, you will always find that His way is the best way for you.

When you talk to other people, you have two hearts to consider: yours and theirs. Gentle words spoken to someone else can turn away their wrath. Harsh words, on the other hand, can ignite a raging fire of anger. When you think about the words you will say during a conflict before you say them, you are more likely to communicate what you truly intend. You are also more apt to use words that are kind and appropriate for the situation.

As we ponder this, let’s aim to select our words thoughtfully. Rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us in speaking gently, even when faced with provocation. By doing so, we not only show reverence to God but also nurture our connections with others. Healthy conflict resolution builds bridges.

Dear God, Your Word reminds me that You are patient and kind. I, however, often turn to anger when I don’t get my way, or when I feel someone else’s words attacking me. In those moments of conflict, remind me through your Holy Spirit, that “a soft answer turns away wrath.”  Help me to choose words that will not stir up anger in myself, or in others. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
