Today, November 30, is my maternal grandmother’s birthday. We called her Mimi, and she passed away many years ago from pancreatic cancer. Born in California of Italian immigrant parents, my Mimi raised two daughters with my grandfather, who immigrated from Italy when he was 6 years old. If they didn’t want us grandchildren to know what they were talking about, of course they spoke in Italian. I miss my Mimi still, even though it’s been so many years since she’s been gone, and I’m a grandmother myself now. So today, let’s say a prayer for grandmothers.

Even to your old age I am he,
    and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
    I will carry and will save.

Psalm 46:4
A young child's hand curls around her grandmother's finger as she prays a prayer for grandmothers.

Dear Lord, thank you for grandmothers. I know there are many people who never got to know their grandmothers, and there are some who don’t get to spend a lot of time with theirs, but I ask Your blessing on all those who carry the title of grandmother.

For those grandmas who are raising their grandchildren for one reason or another, I ask for strength, provision, and peace. Let them know they are not alone. Help them to have patience with the energy of a little one when they might not have much energy themself. Give them abounding grace to show love and kindness. Help them to teach their grandchildren about You, about how much You love them all the time. Help them create a home of peace and safety for a child who might feel displaced or unwanted. May they shine Your grace every day.

For those grandmas who are far from their grandchildren, give them creativity in how to stay connected. Help them to feel honored and valued and give them opportunities to be with their grandchildren in person whenever they can. Remind them how much You love them, and show them how they can let their grandchildren know how much they are loved.

For those grandmas who have the delight of seeing their grandchildren often, give them joy, laughter, and a heart to know their grandchild’s heart. Help them to get to know them deeply and not just have fun with them. Remind them that they bring a deep value to their grandchild’s life. They hold a special place that no one else has. Give them health and energy to enjoy their grandchild’s life for as long as possible.

For grandmothers everywhere, Lord, I thank You. Bless them in a tangible way so they know You are near to them. Surprise them with joy today even if their grandchildren are far away. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Now listen to a sample of this Abide meditation about being loved by God all the days of our lives.

Whenever you think about your grandmothers, no matter what age you are, pray this prayer for grandmothers everywhere. If your grandmothers are still alive, consider giving them a call. If you are a grandmother yourself, like I am, reach out to your grandchildren today. Let them know how much they are loved.
