Do you think you’re a generous person? Maybe you’ve never asked yourself that question. For me, I think I’m generous in some areas, but I can be super selfish in others. A fairly recent tradition, Giving Tuesday can be a measure of how generous you are. Do you just shrug it off as another ploy by non-profits to get you to donate to their cause? Well, let’s pray this prayer for generosity today and see how God can change your heart.

A small boy shares his snack with a little girl reminding us to pray a prayer for generosity.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

James 1:17, English Standard Version

Dear God, You have given so much to me. Everything that I have is from You from the air that I breathe to my job to my family. You are the giver of every good and perfect gift. Your generosity knows no bounds. Help me to be like You.

Jesus, You said that where my treasure is, there will my heart be also. You also said that it is more blessed to give than to receive. You also pointed out the poor widow who gave out of her poverty, and You praised her. I want to have that kind of generous spirit, giving to the work of Your kingdom both in my hometown and around the world.

I know there are scammers out there; people who ask for money and then misuse it. But I don’t want my skepticism to be my guide. I want You to be my guide. So give me wisdom and discernment, but also a tender heart to hear Your voice. Remind me to ask You whenever I am presented with an opportunity to give.

And please help me not to give out of compulsion or for self-gratification. You love a cheerful giver, and You love when I give in secret and don’t take credit for myself. Thank You for modeling for me what generosity looks like, not just financially, but in grace, forgiveness, time—everything I have. I want to honor You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
