How to Sleep Better at Night Naturally with God’s Word

Having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Download Abide for Christian sleep meditations that use calming techniques and Scripture verses framed in calming stories to lull you into a peaceful slumber.

I’ve gone through periods in my life when good sleep just kept evading me. Even after weeks of great rest, life would inevitably throw some worry or stress my way, and I would be back to square one—sleepless nights spent staring at my clock. And I’ve tried my fair share of sleep remedies. While some worked for a while, it never felt like I was really getting to the root of my insomnia or fixing it in the most effective way. Finally, I decided I needed to learn how to sleep better at night naturally. If you’re here, I’m guessing you’re ready to do the same.

The Benefits of Learning to Sleep Better Naturally

Embracing natural methods to improve our sleep can bring a profound sense of peace and rejuvenation to our lives. When we honor ourselves with restorative practices rooted in our faith, we unlock a deeper connection to our spiritual well-being. I like to think of it as not just thinking about what my body and mind need for a good night’s rest, but what my soul craves as well.

Learning how to sleep better naturally also encourages us to turn inward and reflect on our thoughts, which brings us a greater awareness of the worries and stresses that may be keeping us up at night. If something that happened during the day is making me anxious, just trying to forget about it and sleep doesn’t work. But when I approach my sleep from a more mindful perspective and eventually allow myself to set my worries down, I find that sleep comes much faster.

Sleeping Naturally in God’s Embrace

When we give ourselves permission to rest, we acknowledge the divine design of our bodies. We were created to require renewal and restoration. God reminds us in Psalm 4:8 that He is the one who “makes [us] dwell in safety.” This verse reminds us that sleep is a heavenly gift, and we should trust God to watch over us as we rest. Each night that you surrender your worries to Him can transform your sleep into a sacred ritual, where you invite peace into your hearts and receive the strength to face a new day with renewed faith and hope.

And there are many more verses found in God’s Word that remind us of the importance of sleeping in His embrace. Here are five pieces of Scripture that I find particularly beautiful:

  • Psalm 3:5: “I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the LORD sustains me.”
  • Psalm 127:2: “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
  • Proverbs 3:24: “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”
  • Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
  • Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Reading these verses before bed can be a powerful way to remember God’s presence as your head hits the pillow. But what if we could go even deeper? How can you further use the Word of God to learn how to sleep better at night naturally?

5 Ways to Sleep Better Naturally with the Word of God

1. Listen to Calming Sleep Scriptures

Have you ever heard of using Scripture to fall asleep? Not something to reflect on before bed but something you can listen to as you close your eyes and drift off. Abide offers tons of Sleep Scriptures that take the biblical stories you know and love and narrates them for you in a way that brings your body and soul to a place of rest. It’s a powerful way to quiet the mind and allow yourself to be guided toward God’s embrace and into peaceful sleep.

2. Try a Christian Sleep Story

Sleep stories are a unique audio experience that will guide you through a story that quiets your mind and brings your body to a state of rest. I find them to be the most effective when I’m struggling with spiraling thoughts or just can’t seem to take my mind off my worries. Abide’s sleep stories collection covers a range of topics, from protection to healing, from travel to belonging. Each story will carry your anxious mind to a place of spiritual rest that you can take right into your dreams.

3. Check out the Evenings with Jesus Series

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This is exactly what Abide’s Evenings with Jesus series helps you do. Each audio devotion shows you how to finally lay your burdens down and find rest in Jesus. It’s the perfect thing to do at the end of a busy day, when you’re ready to naturally unwind and allow yourself to be embraced by Jesus’ love and protection.

4. Turn to Relaxing Music

Even though sleep stories have been helpful to me in the past, sometimes my mind is too weary to focus on a story. That’s when I turn to calming music. Abide has a beautiful collection of sleep music to bring peace to your mind and body. It can be a great way to transition into a state of rest before you drift off. Whether you prefer piano, synths, flute, or vocals, every audio is designed to create a peaceful atmosphere for better natural sleep.

5. Listen to Peaceful ASMR Soundscapes

Soundscapes can be an even gentler way to prepare your mind and body for restful sleep. They enhance relaxation by activating your senses and promoting a feeling of warmth and safety—ideal for inviting God’s presence as you surrender to sleep. Picture soft raindrops falling, the rustling of leaves in a gentle breeze, the familiar chirp of crickets, or the subtle crackling of a warm fire. Each sound will guide your body into a state of rest that helps you sleep better naturally within the sounds of God’s beautiful creation.
