How to Turn Off Your Mind and Rest in the Lord

Having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Download Abide for Christian sleep meditations that use calming techniques and Scripture verses framed in calming stories to lull you into a peaceful slumber.

After a busy day of work and errands, there’s nothing I love more than the moment my head hits my pillow. The day is done, and I can finally rest. But sometimes, my mind has a different idea. Even though my body is tired, my brain just cannot seem to calm down. My thoughts race with to-do lists for tomorrow or anxiety over whether I accomplished enough that day. But amidst the chaos there lies an eternal refuge—a place of rest found in the loving embrace of the Lord. Unfortunately, reaching that place is sometimes easier said than done. So how can we learn how to turn off our minds and find rest in God?

Why It’s Hard to Turn Off Your Mind

Each of us struggles with turning off our brains for different reasons. If you aren’t quite sure why your thoughts race during the evening, try asking yourself these questions:

  • Are You Worrying About the Future?

Concerns and uncertainties about what lies ahead can keep our minds buzzing long after the day is done. Whether it’s anxiety over our jobs, relationships, or finances, the fear of the unknown can prevent us from finding peace in the present moment.

  • Do You Have an Overloaded Schedule?

Our lives can become jam-packed with responsibilities and commitments. From work deadlines to family obligations, a constantly packed schedule leaves little room for our minds to unwind, which makes it challenging to quiet our thoughts when it’s time to rest.

  • Are You Struggling with Perfectionism or Self-Doubt

Striving for perfection and harboring self-doubt can create an inner dialogue fraught with criticism and worry. This relentless pursuit of doing and being “enough” can keep our minds trapped in a cycle of evaluation and stress, rather than allowing us to let go and rest.

  • Do You Have Information Overload?

While living in an age of constant connectivity has its benefits, we can sometimes be bombarded with information from all directions. The relentless stream of news, social media updates, and digital distractions can overstimulate our minds and make it hard to feel any restful stillness.

Why Turning Off Your Mind is Important

Turning off your mind is not merely about seeking peace for the sake of tranquility; it is a spiritually significant act that aligns us with God’s divine will for our lives. Rest is a sacred gift from God, meant to refresh our hearts and renew our spirits. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus lovingly invites us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This powerful promise reminds us that true rest can only be found in Him.

By quieting our minds, we open ourselves to the gentle whispers of the Holy Spirit. How many directions from God have we missed simply because our mind was preoccupied with other things? When we allow His guidance and comfort to flow into our lives, we can truly experience the presence of God and feel His peace transcend all understanding.

It’s also important to remember that turning off our minds and resting in the Lord is a profound act of trust and obedience. It signifies our surrender to God’s control, acknowledging that He is the source of all we need. Let us cherish this divine invitation to rest and embrace the peace that comes from being in His loving presence.

How to Turn Off Your Mind at Night

1. Try Christian Meditation

Christian meditation consists of focusing our minds on God and His promises, rather than the endless stream of thoughts and worries that often consume us. It involves intentional reflection on biblical truths and allows us to draw closer to God’s presence. With the Abide app, you can access a variety of guided meditations based on Scripture that are designed to help relieve your anxiety and bring you to a place of spiritual comfort and rest.

2. Talk with God Before Bed

Prayer offers a direct line of communication with God that realigns your focus from the chaos of life to the serenity of His presence. Before you go to bed, spend a few moments talking with God about your worries, burdens, and blessings. This intentional act of conversation promotes a sense of lasting peace that lets you finally click off your brain and place your trust in His hands.

3. Use Music or Soundscapes

Incorporating music or calming soundscapes into your bedtime routine can help quiet your mind and create an environment conducive to rest. Use Abide’s music to refocus your thoughts on God’s promises and provide a soothing backdrop for winding down. Abide also offers soundscapes like ocean waves, gentle rain, or forest sounds to help mask disruptive noises and bring a natural calmness to your surroundings.

4. Create a Deep Breathing Routine

Deep breathing exercises help lower stress levels and signal your nervous system to relax. Inhale through your nose, hold your breath for a few seconds, and exhale through your mouth. Make your inhalation deep and your exhalation slow. As you breathe, meditate on a Bible verse or a simple phrase like, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). This practice quiets your mind and grounds you in the comforting truths of God’s Word.

5. Listen to Sleep Stories

Sleep stories offer a tranquil escape from your worries by guiding your mind through calming narratives inspired by biblical themes and God’s creation. By focusing on these peaceful stories, you can redirect your thoughts away from daily stresses and immerse yourself in a serene, restful mindset. The Abide app provides an array of sleep stories designed to bring comfort and relaxation, helping you unwind and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

6. Make Your Room a Peaceful Environment

Transforming your bedroom into a sanctuary conducive to rest is essential for helping turn off your brain before sleep. Declutter your space, choose bedding that is comfortable to you, and minimize distractions by keeping ambient light out of the bedroom. If you’re still struggling to slow your mind, try incorporating something new. Dim the lights an hour before bedtime or use calming scents like lavender or chamomile.

7. Listen to This Prayer to Relax Your Mind in One Minute

When you’re lying in bed with racing thoughts, sometimes the last thing you want to do is get up and try a bunch of new things. Using a short and simple prayer can help center your thoughts on God’s peace. Take a moment to find a comfortable position. Close your eyes, and focus your mind on the presence of God with the prayer below. Allow these words to wash over you. Turn your concerns over to Him as you get the rest you need.
